Building systems that serve pigs everywhere...

In 2026, Sisu Refuge is focusing on a small number of intentional, systems-level initiatives designed to strengthen long-term care for pigs while building tools that can support other sanctuaries and caretakers.

These projects reflect a shift from rescue toward sustainable infrastructure - prioritizing longevity, ethical veterinary care, and operational resilience. Each initiative is designed to be scalable, replicable, and grounded in the lived experience of caring for animals who are often overlooked once they are no longer considered “productive.”

Empowering & Supporting Other Organizations

Sanctuary Health Monitoring System

Spring 2026: We are taking our animal ID binders and medical record system digital! We have developed a new app (to share with other non-profit rescue organizations) that will allow increased efficiency among staff and improved monitoring of residents.

The app is extremely user-friendly and has private databases for each org, staff and volunteer login, admin controls, a photo ID registry, a sanctuary medical forum to discuss treatments, and it even has the ability to store uploaded medical files and incident reports to share with team members. Loggin medication, posting vet appointments, and tracking sponsors is all included in this free resource. Should be fully ready to launch April 3rd!

Replicable Fodder & Resilient Feeding Systems Program

Sisu Refuge will establish an on-site fodder production system designed to reduce feed costs, increase nutritional quality, and build resilience against supply chain disruptions. The system will be documented with the explicit goal of replication by other sanctuaries and rescue organizations.

Why this matters:
Feed costs are one of the largest and least predictable expenses for animal sanctuaries. Developing a documented, affordable fodder system creates long-term sustainability not just for Sisu - but for the wider rescue community.

2026 Milestones

  • Design and install a scalable fodder system
  • Track costs, labor inputs, yield, and pig health indicators
  • Publish a step-by-step implementation guide
  • Share findings with other sanctuaries and partners

Long-term impact:
A practical model for reducing operational costs while improving animal nutrition and welfare.

Future initiatives under development include a formal hospice and palliative care framework for large-breed pigs and an educational resource hub to support other animal sanctuaries.

As the year progresses, additional projects may be introduced as capacity allows. For now, Sisu’s focus is on launching the foundational systems that will support our animals - and the broader rescue community - for years to come.
