Maple the Mother Pig Brought Toys to Her Adopted Piglets – And It’s Changing How People See Pigs

On a rainy day here at the sanctuary, Maple did something small – but deeply meaningful. She got up, went outside in the rain, and brought a toy inside for her adopted babies to play with!

Maple is a rescue pig who survived trauma before coming to safety, and moments like this show what animals are capable of when they feel secure, bonded, and trusted. This wasn’t trained behavior. It wasn’t prompted. It was a choice.

Pigs are highly intelligent, emotional animals with strong maternal instincts. In sanctuary environments, where they are allowed autonomy and safety, these natural behaviors emerge in ways that continue to surprise even experienced caregivers. This long video captures real sanctuary life – unpolished, slow, and honest. You’ll see quiet moments, play, rest, and the everyday rhythms that make healing possible. This isn’t meant to be rushed.

At Sisu Refuge, we provide lifelong care to large-breed pigs and other rescued farmed animals. Our work focuses on rehabilitation, education, and changing how the world understands farmed animals.

In this video you’ll see:
• Pig maternal behavior and bonding
• Emotional intelligence in pigs
• Sanctuary life on a rainy day
